Annual Report 2014


The new scientific annual report 2014 has been published recently.
In  2014, ISL celebrated 55 years of French-German research for security and defense. 55 years young  - with a strong strategic approach, a rejuvenated  research staff and a research portfolio setting its priorities to national requirements in France and Germany.

ISL research has been streamlined and  its organizational structure concentrates on four core areas:

Energetic and advanced protective materials, Flight techniques for projectiles, Laser and electromagnetic technologies, Protection technologies, security and situational awareness.

Beyond thematic focuses, multidisciplinary and synergetic, cross-cutting approaches are highly fostered and benefit from the variety of scientific disciplines co-localized at ISL.

Sulfates to produce non-toxic “green” energetic materials


Angewandte Chemie, the most prestigious international journal on experimental chemistry just published an online article entitled “Sulfates-based nanothermites: an expanding horizon for metastable interstitial composites” resulting from research work about the use of sulfates as oxidising substances in nanothermites made by Dr. Marc COMET and his team of the NS3E laboratory.

Sulfates are very common substances we are often facing and using in our daily lives.  Sodium sulfate is the basic component of the most washing powders.  Magnesium sulfate has many medical indications as a magnesium source. Calcium sulfate, better known as plaster, composes or covers most of the interior walls in our homes.  The active substance of the “Bordeaux mixture”, copper sulfate, a plant protection product, is used as horticultural fungicide and antibacterial agent. Alum stone used as deodorant is a potassium aluminium sulfate.  The electrolyte in automotive batteries is sulfuric acid which sometimes corrodes the terminals (sulfation) with a formation of lead sulfate. Aluminium sulfate is used as flocculant agent for colloids used for the purification of drinking water as well as mordanting substance to guarantee a permanent dye fixing on cloths.

Les sulfates pour des matériaux énergétiques "verts"


Angewandte Chemie, la revue internationale la plus prestigieuse dans le domaine de la chimie expérimentale, vient de publier en ligne un article intitulé « Sulfates-based nanothermites: an expanding horizon for metastable interstitial composites » issu des recherches réalisées par le Docteur Marc COMET et l’équipe du laboratoire NS3E sur l’usage de sulfates comme substances comburantes dans les nanothermites.

Les sulfates sont des substances très communes que nous rencontrons ou utilisons fréquemment dans notre vie quotidienne. Le sulfate de sodium est le constituant de base de la plupart des lessives en poudre. Le sulfate de magnésium possède de nombreuses indications médicales en tant que source de magnésium. Le sulfate de calcium, plus connu sous le nom de plâtre, compose ou revêt la plupart des cloisons intérieures de nos habitations. Le principe actif de la « bouillie bordelaise », produit phytosanitaire utilisé comme fongicide et antibactérien horticole, est le sulfate de cuivre. La pierre d’alun utilisée comme déodorant est un sulfate double de potassium et d’aluminium. L’électrolyte garnissant les batteries de nos automobiles est l’acide sulfurique, qui corrode parfois les cosses (sulfatage) avec formation de sulfate de plomb. The French-German Research Institute of Saint-Louis is a binational research institute established by the Federal Republic of Germany and the French Republic on the basis of a treaty signed in 1958. The core mission of ISL is: "Research, scientific studies and basic predevelopment in the field of defense and security.

The classical working areas of ISL include: laser-matter interaction, laser development, detonics, perforation, protection, ballistics, the environment and protection of the soldier, acoustics, power electronics, high-power microwaves, aerodynamics and flight mechanics, optronics, sensors.

ISL has reinforced its activities on issues of civil security and countermeasures against terrorism encountered both at home and during overseas military operations.

The institute is situated in Southern Alsace near the German and Swiss borders.
